Arupa Patangia Kalita
Arupa Patangia Kalita is an Assamese short story writer and novelist. She is a recipient of the Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad Award, the Katha Prize and the Prabina Saikia Award. She was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014 for her short story collection titled Mariam Austin Othoba Hira Barua. Her works have been translated into Bengali, English and Hindi, and relate to the lives of the Assamese middle class and working class, focussing on women's issues, violence and insurgency.
Atulananda Goswami
Atulananda Goswami is an Assamese short story writer and novelist. His works have been met with great acclaim over his lengthy literary career. He has also been involved in the translation of many English, Bengali and Oriya texts into Assamese, and of Assamese into English. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2006 for his short story collection Seneh Jarir Ganthi, the Ambikagiri Roy Choudhury Sahitya Bota in 1991, the Kumar Kishore Sowarani Bota in 1997, the Katha Award in 1992 and the Sneha Bharati Sahitya Samman in 1998.
Bhabendra Nath Saikia
Bhabendra Nath Saikia, apart from being a short story writer and novelist, was also a journalist, playwright and film director. He has numerous awards to his credit, including the Padma Shri, the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Srimanta Sankardeva Award, the highest award instituted by the Government of Assam.
Birendra Kumar Bhattacharyya
Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya was an Indian writer and one of the pioneers of modern Assamese literature. He was the first ever Assamese writer to receive the Jnanpith Award, which was awarded to him in the year 1979 for his novel Mrityunjay (Immortal).
Harekrishna Deka
Harekrishna Deka joined the Indian Police Service in 1968. A poet, short story writer and critic, he is a prominent literary figure in Assam. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award (1987) for Aan Ejon, a collection of poems.
Homen Borgohain
Homen Borgohain is a poet, short story writer, novelist, essayist and journalist. He has been honoured with several awards including the Asom Valley Literary Award, the Sahitya Akademi Award, Asom Prakasan Parishad Award, besides many awards for journalism. His writings have been translated into several Indian languages.
Indira Goswami
Indira Goswami, also known as Mamoni Raisom Goswami, has written fifteen novels, hundreds of short stories and several research papers. Among her major novels are Nilkanthi Broja, Ahiron, Mamore Dhara Tarowal and Tej Aru Dhulire Dhusarita Pristha. She has been honoured with several national and international awards for her creative writings, including the Katha Award for Creative Fiction, the Bharatiya Jnanpith Award, the Sahitya Akademi Award and the International Jury Award for the film Adarya based on her novel Une Khowa Hawda. She is presently the Head of the Department of Modern Indian Languages and Literary Studies, University of Delhi.
Jyotidev Goswami
Jyotidev Goswami writes short stories as well as satires on social, political and bureaucratic life. His published works include the short story collections Porajoy, Oboidh, Hasya Byanga Golpo and Tikotbihin Yatri, and the satirical collections Loghu Guru and Romya Rosona.
Krishna Bhuyan
Krishna Bhuyan wrote his first short story at the age of 16 and continued writing for nearly seven decades more, publishing stories mostly in the numerous journals of Assam. His last story was published in Bihu special of Asam Bani in April, 1998. He has to his credit two novels, five radio plays and a collection of poems, besides numerous short stories.
Kuladhar Saikia
Kuladhar Saikia has been writing short stories, poems, critical essays and plays right from his school days. Winner of the Katha Award for Creative Fiction and the Sahitya Akademi Award, he was appointed as the DGP of Assam Police in 2018.
Lakshmi Nandan Bora
Lakshmi Nandan Bora has a Masters in Pure Physics from Presidency College, Kolkata, and a doctorate in Meteorology from Andhra University. He has taught at Assam Agricultural College, Jorhat, and at the Johannes Gutenberg University, Germany. His novel Ganga Chilanir Pakhi has been translated and published in twenty-two Indian languages by National Book Trust, New Delhi. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1988.
Mahim Bora
Mahim Bora, a teacher by profession, was a short story writer, novelist, poet, playwright, essayist and translator. He made his mark in the realm of Asomiya fiction through his collection titled Kathnibari Ghat. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2001 and the Padma Shri in 2011.
Mitra Phukan
Mitra Phukan, a writer, classical vocalist and translator, is a recipient of the Katha Award for Translation, and has translated into English the works of many important contemporary authors of Assam, confining herself mostly to short fiction. She has authored several award winning books for Children's Book Trust, which have been translated into Asomiya, Hindi and Bangla, besides many short stories and school textbooks. A popular columnist, she contributes to The Sentinel and Homelink, premier papers of the North East, and Sruit, the journal of dance and music published from Chennai. She is currently the editor of NEWFrontiers, the annual literary journal of the North East Writers' Forum.
Nirod Choudhury
Nirod Choudhury, a journalist by profession, has around thirty eight short story collections and eight novels to his credit. Four of his short stories have been made into feature length films, of which the film Chameli Memsaab had received two national awards.
Nirupama Borgohain
Nirupama Borgohain is an Assamese novelist and journalist. She is a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award for her novel Abhiyatri, however she returned the award in 2015 citing intolerance in the society. She is also a recipient of the Assam Valley Literary Award.
Sarat Chandra Goswami
Sarat Chandra Goswami was a short story writer in Assamese and a founding member of the Asam Sahitya Sabha.
Saurabh Kumar Chaliha
Saurabh Kumar Chaliha is a name of eminence in modern Assamese literature. He was a recipient of the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 1974 for his short story collection Ghulam.
Sheelabhadra
Rebati Mohan Dutta Choudhury, better known by his pen-name Sheelabhadra, was an Assamese writer and academician. He is a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1994 for his collection of short stories titled Madhupur Bahudur.
Syed Abdul Malik
Syed Abdul Malik is a name of eminence in Assamese literature. He was the President of the Asam Sahitya Sabha in 1977. He was a recipient of the Padma Shri, the Padma Bhushan and the Sahitya Akademi Award.
