Bhabendra Nath Saikia (1932–2003) was a leading Assamese writer, filmmaker, and academic, widely regarded as a pioneer of modern Assamese literature. His novels and short stories sensitively portray middle‑class life, ethical conflicts, and social change. His notable works include Agni Snan, Antaral, and Sarathi. Saikia also directed acclaimed parallel‑cinema films in Assamese. He received numerous awards, including the Srimanta Sankardeva Award, the Sahitya Akademi Award, and the Padma Shri, leaving a lasting cultural legacy. He passed away in 2003.
