Birendra Kumar Bhattacharyya (1924–1997) was a distinguished Assamese novelist, short story writer, and journalist. Deeply influenced by the Indian freedom struggle and leftist ideals, his writing explores social injustice, political consciousness, and human resilience. His notable works include Mrityunjay, Yaana, and Iyaruingam. He received the Jnanpith Award for Mrityunjay and earlier won the Sahitya Akademi Award, establishing him as a major figure in modern Assamese literature. He passed away in 1997.
