Katha invites manuscripts from all writers, translators and storytellers to participate in this year’s search for excellence in writing and translating for children.

A SEARCH FOR EXCELLENCE IN WRITING

The idea is to encourage, foster and applaud quintessential Indian writings in translation or otherwise, wrapped in a certain magic. To produce culturally distinctive writing that communicates to a child the special little worlds each one of us comes from. To reveal to them the uniqueness and quirks of our many Indias. And give our children the experience of travelling through our multifarious lived experiences! If you’re in love with language and moved by the idea of creating diverse landscapes for children, tell us your story!

THE CATEGORIES
1. Read Aloud/Picture Books for 3-8 year olds
2. Short Stories for 9-15 year olds The word count of the stories could range from 50 – 3500 depending on the age group the story is catering to.

LANGUAGES OF SUBMISSION
We take submissions in English and Hindi only. For translations, the stories can be translated from any language into English and Hindi.

ADJUDICATION
Eminent writers, editors and academicians will be hand-picked to serve as the Jury for the Bal Katha Prize Stories Award.
The process is eclectic and rigorous, and rests only on the quality of the work and its ability to attract the child reader to the joy of reading books. The decision of the Jury will be final.

The winning entries will be published as picture/chapter books.

CONDITIONS FOR ENTRY

• Please send your submissions either in text form or MS Word attachments only. Please ensure the attachments are absolutely virus free.

• Please send the entries marked as ‘The Katha Bal Katha Prize Stories’ in the subject column for easy classification. Only one submission per person/ team will be          allowed.

• Please ensure you receive an acknowledgement of receipt from us.

• Only unpublished works are eligible. The copyright for the published works will rest with Katha.

• To ensure fair adjudication, as soon as an entry is received, it will be given a registration number. The name of the participant will be removed and thereafter, it will     be referred to only by the number.

• The results of the contest will be announced in June 2018. No enquiries will be encouraged before this time period.

• Please ensure that you have read and accepted the conditions of entry and filled in all the details before sending in your submission.

• Team participations of a writer and translator are also welcome.
