Robert L. Hardgrave is a Temple Professor of the Humanities in Government and Asian Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. As acting Director of the Center for Asian Studies in 1996-97 , he organized the symposium, " Word as Matra: The art of Raja Rao" and edited the papers for this volume.
