Munshi Premchand, born Dhanpat Rai, wrote around 300 novels and stories. He enriched the world of modern Indian literature with his focus on social realism and changed the scene of fiction writing by introducing this style of writing. His writings covered the travails of the life of common people from villages as well as the newly emerging urban middle class. Some of his most important works are Godan and Nirmala.
