Nonda Chatterjee, (1938-2012) a much loved writer and educator, was born in Kolkata. She spent most of her teaching career in the Calcutta International School where she served both as a teacher of English and History, and as Principal. Writing books for children as well as adults, Kolkata served as a backdrop for many of her books including, The Old Man Who Would not Listen, her last book for children. In 2006 she received 'The Cambridge University Inspirational Teacher Award', a distinction granted for the first time in India. Her advice to students was, "There is no substitute for reading".
