Masti Venkatesha Iyengar (1891–1986), regarded as the grand old man of Kannada literature, wrote under the pen name Shrinivasa. A prolific writer, he mastered nearly every literary genre and is best known as the “Father of the Kannada Short Story”. His writing style was simple and featured a conversational tone, along with a profound innate grace that captured the moral and emotional dilemmas faced by ordinary people with extraordinary empathy. In 1983, Masti became the fourth Kannada writer to be honoured with the Jnanpith Award, specifically for his historical novel Chikkaveera Rajendra. His multi-volume collection of short stories, Sanna Kathegalu, remains a cornerstone of modern Kannada prose.
