Kiran Nagarkar (1942–2019), born in Mumbai, was the author of the landmark Marathi novel Saat Sakkam Trechalis, published in English by Katha as Seven Sixes Are Forty-Three, and the winner of the 2001 Sahitya Akademi Award for the novel Cuckold. He often spoke of his childhood, of how his grandfather was ostracized for breaking away from the rigid Chitpavan Brahmin community, how his decision to write in English was not always forgiven, and how his hybrid work was never fully accepted. He passed away in 2019.
