Kamaleshwar (1932–2007) was a pioneer of the Nayi Kahani movement in Hindi literature during the 1950s. He shifted the focus of Hindi fiction from romanticism to the internal anxieties of the urban middle class and the existential struggles of the common man. His writing was marked by a sharp, cinematic clarity, a skill he developed during his prolific career in the Indian film and television industry, where he scripted notable films such as Aandhi, Mausam, and the iconic television series Hum Log. His most celebrated work is the historical novel Kitne Pakistan, which earned him the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2003. In addition to his creative writing, Kamaleshwar was a prominent media personality; he served as the Additional Director General of Doordarshan and was the editor of influential magazines like Sarika and newspapers such as Dainik Jagran. For his contributions to Hindi literature, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2005.
