Jaishankar Prasad (1889–1937) is one of the most notable figures in modern Hindi literature and a foundational pillar of the Chhayavad movement, which represents the era of neo-romanticism in Hindi poetry. He contributed significantly to literature and theatre and was also a philosopher, historian, and sculptor. His work embodies a seamless blend of ancient Indian philosophy and modern humanistic values. Prasad’s magnum opus, the epic poem Kamayani (1935), is regarded as one of the greatest works in the Hindi language. He was also an influential dramatist; his historical plays, such as Skandagupta, Chandragupta, and Dhruvaswamini, reimagined India’s Golden Age, instilling a sense of national pride and cultural identity during the struggle for independence.
