Ismat Chughtai (1912–1991) was a key figure in modern Urdu literature and a prominent member of the Progressive Writers’ Association. Known as the “Grande Dame” of Urdu fiction, she boldly addressed themes of female sexuality, class conflict, and domestic oppression, challenging the norms of middle-class Indian society. Chughtai gave voice to women in the zenana (secluded women’s quarters) and captured their authentic speech, often overlooked by male writers. Her most famous work, the short story Lihaaf, subtly explores lesbianism and the frustrations of a neglected wife. Additionally, her semi-autobiographical novel Terhi Lakeer is celebrated as one of the greatest coming-of-age stories in Indian literature, chronicling the struggles of a rebellious woman during the fight for Independence.
