Harindranath Chattopadhyay (1898–1990) was a prominent “Renaissance man” of modern India, celebrated for his contributions to poetry, music, theatre, and cinema. Born into a distinguished intellectual family—his sister was the famous freedom fighter Sarojini Naidu—he made a name for himself as an artist and socialist. Chattopadhyay is best known for his role as the eccentric magician “Barfi” in Satyajit Ray’s Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne and his performance in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Bawarchi. His poetry collection, The Feast of Youth (1918), established him as a master of English verse in India. He also earned recognition from Rabindranath Tagore and Sri Aurobindo. He was also a pioneer of the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) and a talented composer and singer, with “Surya Ast Ho Gaya” being one of his notable songs.
