Gurazada Apparao (1862–1915) was a renowned Telugu poet, playwright, dramatist, and writer. Often referred to as the “Mahakavi”, he believed that literature should serve as a tool for social change, leading him to break away from the rigid and pedantic “Kavyabhasha” (classical poetic language) that dominated the literary scene. Instead, he advocated for “Vyavaharika Bhasha”, the spoken language of the common people. His most enduring masterpiece, the play Kanyasulkam (1892), employed spoken Telugu dialects to critique the abhorrent practice of “bride price” through sharp wit and unforgettable characters.
