Gauri Deshpande (1942–2003) was a prolific Indian writer with several novels, poetry collections, and short stories to her credit, as well as numerous essays, mainly focussed on women and translation. She was known for her fearless exploration of female sexuality, autonomy, and the complexities of human relationships. Deshpande wrote primarily in Marathi and English. She was also an exceptional translator, notably creating a multi-volume Marathi translation of Sir Richard Burton’s The Arabian Nights. Deshpande’s legacy is that of a “writer’s writer”—an intellectual who refused to conform to societal expectations, choosing instead to document the “inner weather” of the modern Indian woman.
