Franz Marc (1880–1916) was a German painter and a key figure in the German Expressionist movement. He is best known for his vibrant, semi-abstract portrayals of animals, particularly horses, deer, and tigers. Marc’s work is characterized by a rigorous colour theory, where specific colours carried deep emotional and symbolic significance. For Marc, blue represented masculinity and spirituality, yellow symbolized feminine joy and sensuality, and red conveyed the heavy, brutal aspects of the physical world. As his career progressed, his style evolved from more recognizable forms to jagged, prismatic abstraction, reflecting the increasing tension in Europe leading up to World War I. Tragically, Marc’s life and artistic development were cut short when he was killed by a shell fragment during the Battle of Verdun at the age of thirty-six
